Upgrade Holding Unit (PHU) Firmware

Chef Kitchen Management provides two (2) methods to upgrade Holding Unit firmware. The method is determined by the type of Holding Unit.

Upgrade through The Portal

The PortalChefAdmin OptionsPHU Upgrade Utility

Before upgrading, ensure that the Holding Unit:

  • Is a network-enabled device.

  • Is connected to the same network as the Chef device.

  • Does not contain active pans.

During the upgrade process, ensure that the Holding Unit:

  • Remains powered on.

To update Holding Units through The Portal:

  1. From the Back of House computer, navigate to The PortalChefAdmin OptionsPHU Upgrade Utility.

  2. From the PHU Upgrade Utility, locate the row of the site and the corresponding holding unit(s).

  3. To the left of each desired row, select the checkbox.

    • It is possible to select more than one (1) row.

    • Upgrades are performed at the same time for all selected rows.

  4. From the upper-right of the panel, select Schedule Upgrade.

    • Alternatively, select Cancel Upgrade to cancel the process, or

    • Reset Changes to clear selections and start over.

  5. From the Set Upgrade Date/Time window, set the Date field.

    • Use the calendar to select a date, or

    • Type the date using the mm/dd/yyyy format.

  6. From the Set Upgrade Date/Time window, use the dropdown to set the Time.

  7. At the bottom of the Set Upgrade Date/Time window, select Save.

  8. Refer to the manufacturer-provided manual for instructions to confirm a successful upgrade.

Upgrade Through the Chef Device

Non network-capable devices are required to follow this firmware upgrade method.

Before upgrading, have the following on hand:

  • Chef device

  • Internet connection

  • An 8GB USB drive, FAT32 format

Before upgrading, gather the following Holding Unit information:

  • Manufacturer

  • Model

  • Size Configuration

To upgrade through the Chef device:

  1. From the Chef device, on the lower-right, select the Chef Tools gear.

  2. From across the top of the Chef Tools menu, select Advanced.

  3. Insert the USB drive into the Chef device.

  4. From the Advanced panel, under PHU Firmware, select Create PHU FW Package on USB Key.

  5. From the Create PHU Firmware Update on USB Drive window, use the designated dropdown to select the following:

    • Manufacturer

    • Model

    • Hardware Version

    • Firmware Type

    • Path of the USB Drive*

  6. From the bottom of the Create PHU Firmware Update on USB Drive window, select Start.

    • Alternatively, select Cancel to exit the process.

  7. Review the request to format the drive, then select Yes.

    • Alternatively, select No to exit the process.

  8. Wait as the drive is formatted and the upgrade files transfer to the USB drive.

  9. Review the confirmation message about the creation of the upgrade files, then select Ok.

  10. From the Chef device, remove the USB drive.

  11. Refer to the manufacturer-provided manual for instructions to upgrade the holding unit via a USB drive.

  12. Repeat Step 3 thru Step 11 for each holding unit.

  13. From the Chef device, on the lower-right, select the Chef Tools gear.

  14. From the Chef Tools menu, select Overview to exit to the Chef Main Screen.

*If the USB Drive is not recognized, reseat the drive and select Reload.
