Create a Tax Rate

Note

  • Associate tax groups with tax rates from the Tax Groups page of the Tax Rates editor.

  • Assign a tax group to a product from the General page of the Product List editor.

  • Assign a tax group to a modifier from the General page of the Modifier List editor.

To create a tax rate record:

Define General Settings for a Tax Rate

General settings for a tax rate include its name, application type, and amount/percentage. Fields with a red asterisk are required.

To define general settings for a tax rate:

  1. From the menu pane on the left, select General.

  2. In the Name field, type a name for the tax rate.

  3. From the Type dropdown, select the application type. The selected option determines how the tax rate is applied.

    • Fixed Amount - Apply a fixed dollar amount to the product price. The dollar amount is determined by the defined tax table on the Tax Table page.

    • Fixed Rate - (default) Apply a percentage-based tax to the product price.

  4. In the Value field, type the specific currency amount (e.g. 1.50) or percentage (e.g. 0.50 for 50%) of the tax rate.

    • This value corresponds to the Type option selected in step 3.

      If Fixed Amount is selected, this value is recognized as a currency amount.

      If Fixed Rate is selected, this value is recognized as a percentage.

  5. From the Based On dropdown, select the basis for the applied tax.

    • Price - Base tax on the price of the product.

    • Quantity - Base tax on the quantity of the product that the customer ordered.

  6. Toggle Tax Inclusive to On to hide the applied tax value on the customer receipt and on the order Item listbox at the POS.

    • The applied tax value is added to the order total, but it is not displayed on a separate line.

  7. From the Tax Class dropdown, select the tax class for the business.

  8. From the Jurisdiction dropdown, select the administrative level that imposes the tax at the site(s).

    Note

    The dropdown is populated with records created using the Tax Jurisdictions editor.

  9. Toggle Use Tax Group Sets to Yes to create sets of tax groups and assigning specific tax application rules to them.

    • When enabled, the Tax Groups and Conditions pages are removed.

  10. Toggle Marketplace Liability to On if the tax rate is liable to the marketplace facilitator when ordered from a tax-liable marketplace facilitator source.

    A "marketplace facilitator" is defined as a marketplace that contracts with third-party sellers to promote the sale of certain goods and/or services.

  11. In the External ID field, type the identifier to use when referencing the tax rate from external systems.

  12. Toggle Tax on Tax to On to calculate the standard taxes for an order, and then calculate tax on the tax amount. The "tax on tax" is added to the standard tax amount for a grand tax total.

Define the Tax Rate Availability

To define the availability of a tax rate:

  1. From the menu pane on the left, select Availability.

  2. Locate the Availability section.

  3. Toggle Active to Active if the tax rate is currently applicable at the site.

    • Multi-site users: From the right of the field, select the globe icon to define values for each site.

Associate Product Tax Groups with a Tax Rate

To associate product tax groups with a tax rate:

  1. From the menu pane on the left, select Tax Groups.

  2. Locate the Product Tax Groups section.

  3. Select tax groups for the tax rate:

    • From the Available column, select a tax group.

    • Select the right arrow to move the tax group to the Included column.

    • Select the left arrow to remove a selected tax group from the Included column.

Associate Modifier Tax Groups with a Tax Rate

To associate modifier tax groups with a tax rate:

  1. From the menu pane on the left, select Tax Groups.

  2. Locate the Modifier Tax Groups section.

  3. Select tax groups for the tax rate:

    • From the Available column, select a tax group.

    • Select the right arrow to move the tax group to the Included column.

    • Select the left arrow to remove a selected tax group from the Included column.

Define Tax Rate Application Rules

To define the rules that govern how the tax rate is applied during the tender process:

  1. From the menu pane on the left, select Rules.

  2. In the Min Taxable Amount field, type the minimum order total to which the tax rate may apply.

  3. In the Max Taxable Amount field, type the maximum order total to which the tax rate may apply.

  4. From the Taxable by dropdown, select the desired option:

    • Consumption Type - Tax is determined by the consumption type of the order: On Premises or Off Premises.

      From the Consumption Types dropdown, select the consumption type.

    • Destination - Tax is determined by the order destination.

      Select the order destination(s) from the Taxable Destinations table.

    • None - Tax is not affected by consumption type or order destination.

Define a Tax Table for a Fixed Amount Tax Rate

To define a tax table for a Fixed Amount tax rate:

  1. From the menu pane on the left, select Tax Table.

    Note

    The Tax Table page is only available when Fixed Amount is selected from the Type dropdown on the General page.

  2. From the Tax Table field, select the application method:

    • Actual - Tax value is explicitly defined in the tax table.

    • Pattern - Tax value is determined as needed by the pattern of ranges defined in the tax table.

  3. From the upper-right of the Tax Table field, select Add Range to define order total ranges, and the respective fixed currency amount to apply to the order total as tax.

    For example, $0.04 tax is applied when an order total is within the range of $0.99 - $5.00.

    • In the Range Start field, type the lowest currency amount in the range. The Range Start value for the first range is $0.00.

    • In the Range End field, type the highest currency amount in the range.

    • In the Amount field, type the currency amount that is applied to the order as tax.

    • Select OK.

  4. Repeat step 3 to add additional rows to the tax table (if applicable).
